Serbia Women's Medical Team Blog: Upside Down

Every morning before heading to one of the villages, we spent time telling stories of how Jesus lived life. Through the stories we caught a glimpse of his attentiveness, compassion and loving care of those who went unnoticed. He wanted to show that God cares for and desires to be in relationship with all people.

We also observed how Jesus was always turning things upside down. He was continually challenging those who maintained the power structures and attitudes of the day. He confronted people’s values and understandings about who mattered, what success was and who God wanted to bless. Those who followed Jesus slowly started to see that it is the poor, downtrodden and vulnerable who are of great interest to God.

While in Serbia, we interacted with those who continue to be of great interest to God. We were inspired by their passionate worship and challenged by their fervent prayers that expressed complete dependence and ruthless trust in God. They extended unrestrained generosity by welcoming us into their homes where we shared meals. Their loving acceptance was expressed through smiles, warm hugs and kisses. Many of our preconceived attitudes and perceptions were turned upside down.

We have returned home and are very thankful for the extraordinary opportunity that has been ours. Our beloved brothers and sisters in Serbia have inspired, enriched and challenged our thinking and attitudes. Their way of living has reminded us Who and what matters most in life.
