Today, we started with a wonderful pastry breakfast prepared by Bilja. Some of us tried Turkish coffee so we could start our first seminar with lots of energy! Faith led us through a Bible Story that stretched us, yet really helped us launch into the unknown. All our training gets tested today in front of 60 beautiful Roma women in Vranje.
The drive there was so beautiful with green rolling hills surrounding us everywhere. Bata, our host and driver, got us there safely with just a few 'interesting' car passing experiences. The day is hot and beautiful.
In Vranje we got to witness some of the typical Roma culture, unique to holidays. Today is "Big Friday" before Easter. Some Roma's apparently slaughter lambs to celebrate. We were a little stunned but learned the 'why's' behind it. (We're not in Oregon anymore"!). Also many of the businesses are closed for the holiday too.
When we arrived all 60 ladies already filled the small room. All ages. Pastor Vladica introduced us, and away we went with our talks. Margaret set a beautiful scriptural basis for taking care of our health. Then Darla taught on hygiene, including showing everyone how to sing & wash our hands. Then Chelsea dove into reproductive health, giving vivid and important info about all kinds of protection. Laura taught on caring for children and protecting them from disease. Then Terri wrapped it up with a talk on a healthy plate for nutrition.
So much info, yet valued enough that some ladies dashed out to grab non-church friends to join us. The ladies also really loved that we stayed and tested their blood pressure & sugar levels.
Some info we shared was graphic and pushed on a godly perspective about life. We believe the message is powerful -- to share truth & grace - among a group that more than 50% already experienced abortion.
Women talking truth among women. It transcends cultures and we're grateful. Our Serbian & Roma pastor friends are bold to invite this into the conversation among Christians and the community. Our team is grateful to serve in this way!!!
Tomorrow a new day in another Roma community in Nis.
